UFL opener: Stallions FC upsets Global XI

Source inquirer.net
By Cedelf P. Tupas
MANILA, Philippines—Stallions FC, more fluid in its attacking game early on, stunned defending champion Global FC, 3-2, at the start of the United Football League Cup Saturday night at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

Francis Gustilo and Jovanie Simpron put the all-Ilonggo side on top, 2-0, at halftime before Ruben Doctora appeared to have put the outcome beyond doubt with his 54th-minute strike.

But Global, galvanized by the entry of substitute Janrick Soriano, struck back in the 66th minute thanks to Remi Sery, before Izo El-Habbib made it close six minutes from time.

In the first UFL match aired live on national television, Global was denied of an equalizer in controversial fashion in second-half injury time when Japanese midfielder Yu Hoshide slid in to meet Soriano’s cross in front of goal only for the linesman to flag him offside.

Still, it was a remarkable result for Stallions, who came into the game as heavy underdogs after Global upgraded its lineup during the offseason with the acquisition of Hoshide and Angel Guirado.

The Fil-Spanish striker didn’t play because of an injured ankle he sustained in the Philippine Azkals’ 0-2 loss to Singapore in an international friendly Friday night.

“It (the win) means a lot considering we are in the Group of Death,” said Stallions coach Ernie Nierras, whose team is also bracketed with powerhouse Pachanga and dangerous Queen City Cebu United.

Looking to avenge their 1-nil loss to Global in the quarterfinals last season, Stallions got off to a bright start with Gustilo finding the back of the net with a shot from near the halfline in the 10th minute.

Simpron broke through the Global defense in the 44th minute to double the lead, before Doctora added to Stallions’ tally by following up his saved shot nine minutes into the second half.

Soriano’s introduction in the 60th minute sparked the Global attack and his menacing runs on the left flank created the opportunity for Sery to volley past Wilson Munoz.

El-Habbib headed home a cross from the right six minutes from time.

“We were still lucky because if they had 10 more minutes, they would have equalized,” said Nierras.

Stallions FC stuns defending champ Global in historic UFL opener

By : Rick Olivares
The opening match of the UFL Cup between Global FC and Stallions FC was full of surprises.

First, Global, the defending champions of the UFL Cup, were without head coach Frank Muescan. Team manager Dan Palami worked the game as interim coach until Australian Graeme MacKinnon’s arrival next week.

Second, Global spotted Stallions three goals, before roaring back late to almost tie the game.

In the end, the Iloilo-bred Stallions squad escaped with a thrilling 3-2 victory as the good-sized crowd at the Rizal Memorial Football Coliseum sat stunned.

Coaching woes

Prior to the UFL season, Muescan said that he had not heard anything official about a coaching change at Global, although there were rumors. Palami, meanwhile, did not respond to inquiries.

Muescan, who co-coaches the UAAP champion UP Maroons football team with former Azkal Anto Gonzales, had then just gotten back from Global’s final practice, which the team used to prepare for its opener against Stallions. He was quite concerned because his players were asking questions about the rumors. Furthermore, not all of them showed up for practice.

After being beset by these woes, one had to wonder how Global would come out against Stallions.

True enough, the defending champions came out flat. The return of Misagh Bahadoran from national duty didn’t help as the team clearly lacked fluidity and pace. There was no communication with one another and the defense looked disinterested, save for Jerry Barbaso who always plays with a ton of energy. Players didn’t seem focused and couldn’t string up consecutive passes. When Yu Hoshide launched a cross instead of finding Izo El Habbib in the middle, it sailed outside.

Axe to grind

Stallions on the other hand, started out with their motivation clear for all to see. The club is proudly Ilonggo, with former national players on its roster, including some who left with an axe to grind.

The club is known for its high football IQ, it’s midfield wizardry and its roughness. All three were on display in the first half.

Francis Gustilo’s long-range volley, which found the back of the goal at the 10th minute, was brilliant, but not really surprising.

College and regional coaches — particularly Adolfo Alicante and Marjo Allado — usually teach players how to test the verve of goalkeepers with such long-range shots. That much is evident in UAAP football, the Suzuki U-23 national cup, and the SMART Club Championships. And because Global keeper Paolo Pascual was somewhat raw, Gustilo’s strike found its target.

At the 45th minute, Jovanie Simpron broke away to boot in another goal to give the Ilonggos an imposing 2-nil lead heading into the lockers.

The momentum didn’t subside yet when the teams came out in the second half, as Stallions skipper Ruben Doctora scored again, this time at the 55th minute, on another breakaway.

Change of pace

Mysteriously, after Stallions put up a 3-0 lead, they seemed to simply stop playing. The Ilonggos didn’t even really park the bus. Their spacing turned awful and they meekly gave the ball away on so many occasions. It’s hard to believe that nerves came into play because these players have been veterans of many championship games from the time they learned to kick a football around. Maybe it’s their conditioning but whatever the reason, they were not the same team after they scored a third goal.

The entrance of Janrick Soriano, who played for the U-23 cup champions Bacolod, for Global provided pace and inspiration. Remy Sery finally broke through for Global at the 66th minute, on a mishandle by Stallions goalkeeper Wilson Munoz. Izo El-Habbib, the UFL’s top scorer last season, followed with a goal at the 84th minute to cut the Stallions lead to 3-2.

At the 88th minute, Global finally equalized, but a bum offside call disallowed the tying goal, giving Stallions the opening day victory — and more importantly, three points in the “Group of Death.”

Had Global begun its comeback a little earlier, it probably would have not only properly equalized, but also won the game. As it is, they now have to face dangerous Pachanga, and former keeper Kenneth Dolloso, and Cebu Queen City FC.

Azkals targeting Long Teng triumph

Source: Daily Inquirer

MANILA—The Long Teng Cup may not be as prestigious as the Suzuki Cup, but national team manager Dan Palami said there won’t be any letup for the Azkals when they vie in the four-nation tournament in Taiwan.

The Azkals have started preparing for the tournament last week with Fil-German goalkeeper Roland Mueller among the notable additions to the training pool.

The Azkals are also slated to hold a week long training camp in Bacolod starting September 8. They will play three exhibition matches during the camp, including against national club champion Global FC at the Panaad Stadium.

“This is our best chance to win a tournament,” said Palami of their chances in the Long Teng Cup.

The Azkals wound up third in last year’s tournament, which they used as a warmup for the biennial Suzuki Cup Asean Football Championship. The semifinal finish in the 10-nation Suzuki Cup paved the way for the Azkals rise to prominence.

“We will try to balance with putting up a strong team and at the same time give exposure to our young players,” said Palami.

Hong Kong looks serious in its title defense as it is reportedly sending its senior squad in the tournament won last year by its Under-23 squad. Chinese-Taipei and Macau are also vying in the tournament.

Neil Etheridge, Stephan Schrock and Rob Gier will be among the notable absentees for the Azkals in Taiwan as they are focused on their commitments in Europe.

Etheridge is the second-choice keeper at Fulham and hopes to make his English Premiere League debut this season.

Manny Ott is also doubtful to make the Long Teng Cup squad as he is still awaiting clearance from his club, Ingolstadt II.

“We want to maintain good relationships with the clubs of our players so if the tournament is not that important, we would rather not force them to be released,” said Palami.

Mueller, who returned to Germany yesterday, will rejoin the Azkals on Sept. 25, a few days before the Azkals leave for the September 28 to October 4 tournament.

Palami also told the Inquirer that a Fil-Spanish defender Carlie Olaivar De Murga is arriving on Monday to train with the Azkals.

The 22-year-old De Murga, who was recommended to the team by Fil-Spanish striker Angel Aldeguer, plays for Racing Club Portuense in the Spanish third division.

Philippines shines anew against Croatia in the 2011 Homeless World Cup

Source: Daily Inquirer
There is no stopping the Philippine Homeless World Cup team.

The hardworking Philippine side fueled its hot streak in the 2011 Homeless World Cup as the Filipinos stunned Croatia, 8-5, Wednesday in the eight-day street soccer meet in the beautiful city of Paris in France.

Coming off a respectable loss against football powerhouse Netherlands, 2-5, the Filipinos came out guns ablaze and finished off the Croatians with their slick passing and clinical finishing in the event Arena at Champ de Mars, with the Eiffel Tower on the background.

Skipper Janrick Soriano, a native of Negros Occidental and one of the most experienced among the boys, completed his hatrick in the first half and netted two more, while Barotac Nuevo’s John—fondly known as Putot—Celis score two goals, even as co-captain Jeffrey Guelas from Manila added one.

The Philippines, mentored by former national team member Rudy Del Rosario, came out strong and finished even stronger and sent the Croatians clueless on how to contain’s the Filipinos lightning-quick attacking.

The Philippines will face Poland Thursday, and only those who will advance further will get a chance to fight for the Homeless World Cup title (1st to 8th position).

The rest will contest the other cups like Dignitary Cup (9th to 16th), City Cup (17th-24th), Host Cup (25th to 32nd), Community Cup (33rd to 40th) and INSP Networking Trophy (41st to 48th).

The 48 participating countries were divided into two sections after the first stage, with the top three in each group progressing to section one.

Jeffrey De Castro from Cainta , Ricardo Padilla from Pangasinan, Aljhonn Loui Matulac from Estancia in Iloilo, Bert Anthony Sienes from Boystown in Manila, and Michael Rojo also from Talisay City in Bacolod round up the squad, which was formed off of a nationwide search, buoyed only by donations and sponsorships they garnered in the past months.

France youth squad GK Alphonse Areola shows Azkals interest

Source: Daily Inquirer

MANILA—A highly-rated 18-year-old goalkeeper currently playing for France’s youth squad has expressed interest in joining the Philippine football team.

Alphonse Areola, who plays club football for Paris Saint-Germain in the French first division, has been personally invited by Azkals manager Dan Palami to join the Azkals for future competitions.

Palami, who was in Paris to watch several matches of the Philippine Homeless World Cup team, said Areola is still focused on his duties with France but did not discount the possibility of joining the Azkals in the future.

The 6-foot-3 Areola, whose parents are both Filipino, is the first-choice keeper for the French Under-19 squad. He has been tipped as a future top-choice keeper for France’s senior side.

“We have really formidable goalkeepers in the team,” said Palami. Neil Etheridge is currently the No. 1 keeper in the squad, while Filipino-German player Roland Mueller, the second choice goalkeeper of German second division side Duisberg, has also agreed to join the Azkals.

Azkals coach Michael Weiss said Filipino-German striker Kevin Ingreso will beef up the squad next year after getting clearance from his club, Hamburg.

Weiss also revealed that the German Football Association (DFB) is sending a technical adviser in Krautzen Ekhardt in October to make an assessment on the current state of the sport in the country, especially at the youth level.

At the same time, the DFB, is also inviting local coaches Yanti Barsales and Edzel Bracamonte to undergo a three-week extensive coaching course in Germany as part of the assistance package that came with the hiring of Weiss.

Another German coach, Michael Kruger, who was part of the backroom staff of the Tunisia team that reached the World Cup in 2006, will be arriving this month to join the coaching staff for the Azkals Under-23 squad for the SEA Games.

Azkals sponsor Cortal SQR recently gave the team P500,000 for its campaign in the Long Teng Cup in Taiwan next month as well as the SEA Games in December. Cortal also gave the Philippine Homeless World Cup team financial aid of P200,000.

Homeless World Cup - Another win for Philippines

Philippines won 8-2 against Switzerland today in Homeless World Cup in Paris.

They finished number 2 in group and advanced.

Philippines is now in Group B for the Secondary Group Stage alongside Mexico, Costa Rica, Kenya, South Africa and Ireland .

Teknika bags PFF Club title

Source: Manila Bulletin
MANILA, Philippines — Rizal-Smart San Beda beat Teknika FC, 2-0, but fell short of its goal as the Teknika booters emerged as the first PFF-Smart Club champions Monday at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.

Back after serving one-game suspensions each, Phil and James Younghusband scored a goal each in the 13th and 72nd minutes, respectively, for the fighting Rizal booters, who, however, missed a lot more scoring chances in trying to overhaul their rivals in the exciting second leg of the home-and-away championship series.

Thanks to its 3-0 triumph in the opening leg last Saturday on the same pitch, Teknika thus clinched the title with a 3-2 goal aggregate following a match where their foes dominated most of the attacks.

“We expected San Beda to go all out to win, and had it been given a little more time, the outcome of this series may have been different,” said Teknika coach Frank Muescan. “They were worthy finals opponents.”

“Our game plan was not to concede more than two goals and we were able to do that despite the return of the Younghusbands. We made some defensive adjustments in the second half and it also helped us a lot,” Muescan added.

“I have to hand it to coach Frank. He really did his homework against us,” said losing coach Aris Caslib. “We had our chances but as you saw we couldn’t convert our opportunities because of the lack of finishing.”
