MANILA, Philippines – Azkals midfielder Jason de Jong has reportedly signed with Indonesian professional football club Persiba Balikpapan.

According to Post Metro Balikpapan Online news, De Jong passed a trial with the club.

It was also reported that the 5’7” Filipino, who had been based in the Netherlands, agreed to an $80,000 contract to play for Persiba Balikpapan.

Persiba Balikpapan is seeing action in the Indonesia Super League.

De Jong, who used to play for Veendam in the Dutch second-division league, is one of the latest Filipino players recruited by Southeast Asian football teams.

The defensive midfielder was supposed to sign up for another Indonesian club, Sriwijaya F.C.

The deal, however, did not work out, resulting in de Jong moving to Persiba Balikpapan.

"What happened in Sriwijaya had to do with that we not agreed on the terms of the contract," de Jong said in his Facebook fan page.

Other Filipino booters being wooed by foreign professional clubs are team captain Aly Borromeo and siblings Phil and James Younghusband.

Another Azkals player, goalie Neil Etheridge, currently plays for Fulham in England.
