Maroons get football bonus


MANILA, Philippines — University of the Philippines gained a twice-to-beat bonus in the finals after beating University of Santo Tomas, 2-0, in the 73rd UAAP men's football tournament Thursday at the Ateneo Football Field.

The Maroons, eager to win their first title since 2009, drew goals from Jay Eusebio in the 29th minute and the league's top scorer Jinggoy Valmayor in the 53rd minute to stay unbeaten. They finished with an 8-1-0 (win-draw-loss) record for 25 points.

The loss denied UST' to wrest the last finals berth as it fell to 5-2-2 – good for 17 points.

La Salle, on the other hand, revived its hope after blanking University of the East, 2-0. The Archers improve to 4-4-1 for 16 points but still need to beat UP and hope that UST loses to Ateneo seal a title duel with UP.

Meanwhile, defending champion La Salle will miss the finals for the first time ever after a 2-2 draw against winless UP. The Lady Archers ended their campaign with a 3-2-3 slate for just 11 points.
