MANILA, Philippines – Emilio “Chieffy” Caligdong, the Azkals player who scored the first football goal in the Philippines’ 2-0 victory over Mongolia, said the shot he made on Wednesday night is hard to repeat.

Caligdong’s goal, which bounced between the legs of Mongolian keeper Ganbayar Tseveensuren, is also called a nutmeg (tunnel) shot in football parlance.

“Nagkataon lang siya, akala niya (Tseveensuren) siguro hindi maba-bounce ‘yung bola sa ground... hinataw ko na lang, kung sisipain ko ng mahina, siguro kaya pa niyang i-save,” said the football veteran from Barotac Nuevo, Iloilo.

Caligdong, who is also a member of the Philippine Air Force, said he savors his contribution to the Azkals’s victory. He added that he may never get the chance to repeat the same shot again.

“Kasi hindi mo na mauulit yung chance na ganyan,” he said.

Caligdong made the goal late in the first half of their Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Challenge Cup qualifying tie versus the Mongolians following a long pass from one of his team mates.

He received the ball with his chest while running near the goal line then left-kicked the ball to the air.

Caligdong then kicked the ball with his right foot, “nutmegging” it between Tseveensuren’s legs for the goal at the 42nd minute of the game.

“Unang una kasi, akala ng depensa sisipain ko ng kaliwa, wala na kong angle kung sisipain ko ng kaliwa especially sa end na line na ng goal. So I decided na ipataas na lang ang bola then sinipa ng kanan ko,” he explained.

Caligdong’s shot was one of the 2 goals the Azkals scored against the Mongolian Blue Wolves.

Filipino-British Phil Younghusband scored the second goal with a curling shot in the 92nd minute of the game.

The Blue Wolves will seek to avenge their loss on March 15 when the home-and-away cup tie resumes in Ulan Bator, the capital of Mongolia.

The Azkals will have to acclimatize themselves to Mongolia's weather, where temperatures can reach lows of -15 degrees Celsius. -- With a report from TJ Manotoc, ABS-CBN News
