Far Eastern University (FEU) took Game 1 of the best-of-three series of the UAAP women's football finals, defeating University of Santo Tomas (UST) via penalty shootout, 2-0, Sunday at the Ateneo Erenchun field.

Mara Kristia Sabanal and Emma Angelie Omictin scored the needed goals as the Lady Tamaraws drew first blood in the series.

Game 2 is on Thursday at the Ateneo Erenchun field.

FEU actually missed its first shot courtesy of Jayneth Mercado, but the Lady Tamaraws recovered as they scored the next two kicks over UST keeper Zipporah Luna.

UST's Isabela Rivilla's shot sailed high while Jowe-Ann Barruga's shot hit the crossbar. Attempts by Hannah Luna and Jovelyn Artillaga were saved by FEU keeper Libra Villarente.

FEU assistant coach Marnelli Dimzon said the Lady Tamaraws played well defensively despite the absence of defender Mea Bernal, who was suspended for the match due to a red card in the previous game.

"We will try to hold on to our advantage," said Dimzon, chief deputy of Korean coach Kim Chul Su. "We need to score early in Game 2, delikado kasi kapag umabot ng penalty shootout." - KY, RCJ, Reuben Terrado, GMA News
