University of the Philippines aims to finish the season unbeaten on Sunday when it collides with University of Santo Tomas in the UAAP men's football finals at the Ateneo Erenchun field.
The Fighting Maroons hold a twice-to-beat advantage as they go into their 2 p.m. finals showdown against the Tigers, looking to reclaim the crown they last won in Season 70.
UP coach Anto Gonzales, however, said that the twice-to-beat incentive may not really turn out to be much of an advantage at all for their team. He recalled the time when the Fighting Maroons won the 2008 title by overcoming a twice-to-beat advantage enjoyed by Far Eastern University.
"It's nothing but less pressure for us, that’s how I see it," said Gonzales.
The Fighting Maroons were the runaway leader in the men's tournament with 28 points behind a 9-1-0 win-draw-loss record.
UST placed second with 20 points with a 6-2-2 mark.
The Fighting Maroons will rely on striker Jinggoy Valmayor to lead them on offense, with the outstanding rookie already having scored eight goals in the tournament.
On the other hand, OJ Clarino and defender David Basa are expected to work doubly hard to extend the championship series as the Tigers vie for their first crown since Season 69.
In the women's division, FEU and UST clash for the title in Game 1 of their best-of-three title showdown at 9 a.m.
The UAAP Board decided to make the championship series a best-of-three affair because the Lady Tamaraws and the Tigresses wound up tied in the standings with 16 points each on similar 5-1-2 win-draw-loss records.
